The Detroit Tigers scored one run off New York Yankees starter Michael Pineda, who entered the game with a 6.92 ERA, but scored three runs off three of the best relievers in the game.
It wasn’t enough. The Tigers stranded the tying run at third in the bottom of the ninth inning and went on to lose, 5-4, on Thursday night at Comerica Park.
“The way we lost is something to look at,” said Tigers utilityman Mike Aviles. “We went down swinging, we went down fighting.”
Aviles said a team couldn’t ask for a better situation than having Miguel Cabrera at the plate with the tying run on third.
