Tigers' Matthew Boyd supporting home in Uganda to 'let children have a childhood'

DETROIT -- When the baseball season is over, Detroit Tigers pitcher Matthew Boyd and his wife Ashley will board a flight to Africa to spend a few weeks with the children of Kingdom Home, a refuge for rescued and vulnerable girls in Uganda.

The Boyds unveiled their new foundation to support Kingdom Home on Tuesday at Comerica Park. They already have the support of teammates Nicholas Castellanos, Shane Greene and James McCann, who have signed up to sponsor some of the 36 children.

"It's a truly special cause that's close to our hearts," Boyd said. "Our goal at Kingdom Home is to provide refuge for these girls, a safe place.
