With MLB rosters expanding from 26 to 28 players on Monday, the Detroit Tigers announced that right-handed relief pitcher Chase Lee and outfielder Justyn-Henry Malloy had been recalled from Triple-A Toledo. The hope for the Tigers is that these September call-ups can help their cause down the stretch as they chase an AL Central title and one of the top two seeds in the American League.
Malloy appeared as a pinch hitter for the Tigers in Monday's series opener against the New York Mets at Comerica Park. According to Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press, the plan is for the Tigers to drop one of their pitchers – presumably Lee – and recall Sawyer Gipson-Long to pitch as a starter or bulk reliever against the Mets on Tuesday.
