DETROIT -- Michael Fulmer has been one of the best pitchers in baseball through the first four months of the season and he's doing it a strange way for this boom-or-bust era.

He's not striking out many batters.

Fulmer is pitching to contact, getting ground balls and keeping the ball in the park. The result has been an average start of 6 2/3 innings, more than any other Tiger, and behind only Chris Sale, Max Scherzer and Clayton Kershaw among qualified starters in both leagues.

He's pitched at least eight innings in five of 18 starts.
