The Detroit Tigers are making a huge mistake.
They appear to be playing it safe by exercising the fourth-year contract option of manager Brad Ausmus. But if general manager Al Avila has decided it’s worth bringing Ausmus back, it should be for more than one season.
If it’s simply a matter of convenience -- that there aren’t any better options available right now -- that’s a disservice to the players and Tigers fans.
Avila was the assistant general manager when Dave Dombrowski replaced Jim Leyland with Ausmus, who had no previous managerial experience, after the 2013 season.
