Sharp: Tigers' rebuild not an easy fixer-upper

The perfect metaphor for the imperfect season.

Exposed cracks. Crumbling infrastructure. Falling pieces.

That doesn't just describe the Detroit Tigers' plummet from elite status, but also the physical state of their home.

The Tigers quickly repaired a concrete portion of an upper-deck step that dropped more than 50 feet and shattered when it hit the lower concourse immediately following Sunday's loss to Texas. The cause was inevitable wear and tear.

The team moved smartly and swiftly. Stadium operations, a City of Detroit building inspector and an independent local contractor gave the bones of the 15-year-old ballpark a thorough examination Monday and Tuesday.
