Royals and Twins are buying, while the Tigers ponder next moves

The Kansas City Royals and Minnesota Twins are eyeing a playoff push, while the Detroit Tigers are in the the position of trade deadline sellers.

On Monday, the Royals acquired three pitchers from the San Diego Padres: starter Trevor Cahill and relievers Brandon Maurer and Ryan Buchter.

Kansas City has strengthened its postseason hopes with a six-game win streak -- including Monday's 12-inning victory over the Tigers -- and has closed to within 1.5 games of the Cleveland Indians in the AL Central.

Cahill should slot at the back end of the Royals' rotation, and Buchter gives them another left-hander out of the bullpen.
