Paul: If Tigers hold fire sale, here are possible scenarios

Detroit – OK, we expected some Detroit Tigers trades.

A Cameron Maybin sign-and-trade seemed logical, and that's essentially what took place shortly after the World Series, with Maybin being shipped to the Los Angeles Angels for a minor-league pitching project rather than the Tigers having to pay the $1-million buyout on his $9-million option for 2017.

Dealing J.D. Martinez always seemed logical. Even trading Ian Kinsler seemed logical. And they remain the best bets to go next.

But Justin Verlander and Miguel Cabrera?

Well, that always seemed like a stretch, seeing as general manager Al Avila, in his post-season debriefing with reporters, suggested the Tigers were going to get smarter with their roster, but that it wouldn't be the dreaded "fire sale.
