Nathan leaves rehab outing with apparent arm injury

Joe Nathan left his rehab appearance early at Triple-A Toledo on Wednesday with what appeared to be an aggravation of his right flexor injury.

Nathan was scheduled to throw one inning, up to 25 pitches, in the Mud Hens’ Wednesday morning game against Louisville. He had thrown 10 pitches, seven for strikes, with a groundout and strikeout when his first-pitch offspeed delivery to Louisville’s Bryson Smith left him in pain.

Nathan appeared to point towards his elbow or forearm as he talked with head athletic trainer Chris McDonald and pitching coach Mike Maroth near the mound. Nathan threw a warmup pitch but was clearly in pain, and promptly left the game.
