In need of another quick inning, Justin Verlander went back to work.
Pablo Sandoval looked to get ahold of one, but struck it to the deepest part of Comerica Park as JaCoby Jones ran it down. Chris Young battled, though, and drove Verlander's pitch count over 100 for the day before striking out looking. He walked Brock Holt with two outs.
Brad Ausmus took a visit to the mound, but decided to keep Verlander in the game to get the last out. It happened to be the correct move as Sandy Leon flew out to shallow right field.
