J.D. Martinez could return to the Tigers this week

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Detroit Tigers right fielder J.D. Martinez is en route to Georgia, where he'll meet up with the Triple-A Toledo Mud Hens on Monday for the final phase of his rehab assignment.

Martinez has been on the disabled list since suffering a sprained right midfoot on March 18 during a spring game in Florida.

After a couple games with the Class A (Advanced) Lakeland Flying Tigers, Martinez will play with the Mud Hens during their four-game series this week against the Gwinnet Braves.

If he shows he's able to handle nine innings in the outfield on back-to-back days, Martinez could rejoin his big-league teammates as soon as Friday, when the Tigers will be in Anaheim for the final swing of their 10-day West coast road trip.
