SAN PEDRO de MACORIS, Dominican Republic — The back road that brings you to the Detroit Tigers’ Dominican Republic academy is bumpy.
There is no speed limit, but Oliver Arias drives at a crawl, rocking back and forth with each bump between crops of sugarcane. Arias, one of the Tigers’ Dominican-area scouts, is driving his wife’s Subaru.
He drives past another team’s academy, and a couple goats mulling about, and he arrives at a sliding steel gate.
