When the Detroit Tigers won the World Series 50 years ago this fall, almost no one understood the quirky inclinations of the team’s soft-spoken owner, John Fetzer.

Even fewer cared in 1984 when the Tigers won a second World Series, this time under a new owner — Domino’s Pizza king Tom Monaghan. Yet, the low-key Fetzer was still the Tigers’ club chairman. And clearly, it was Fetzer who had built that second team of champions.
