How Detroit Tigers reliever Rony García is preparing for 'very important' start

MINNEAPOLIS — The Detroit Tigers picked Rony García for a simple reason: The former Rule 5 draft pick, is prepared to throw more pitches than any of his fellow relievers.

The right-hander is slated to start Wednesday's series finale against the Minnesota Twins, but he isn't a member of the starting rotation. Rather, García is the opener for the Tigers' bullpen-only game.

García, though, is preparing like a starter.

"I've been a starter in the minor leagues," García said Tuesday, with Tigers bilingual media coordinator Carlos Guillen interpreting. "Now that I have a chance to start in the major leagues, I already have my routine.
