General manager Al Avila takes blame for Tigers' failed season

The story of this season’s Tigers ended last Sunday in the visitor’s clubhouse at Turner Field, in front of the television cameras as they said their good-byes to one another, their season officially cut one game short.

But the story of the season was not how the Tigers were a good team — 11 games over the .500 mark — that fell 2 1/2 games short of an American League postseason spot, or the big injuries, or how they couldn’t beat the Indians.

The story of this year’s Tigers was how they could have been so much better if general manager Al Avila had made the right free-agent choices in the winter.
