Detroit Tigers' Victor Martinez cleared to participate in light workouts

SEATTLE – Victor Martinez is ahead of schedule.

The Detroit Tigers’ designated hitter, on the 10-day disabled list with an irregular heartbeat, has begun to participate in light workouts, manager Brad Ausmus said before tonight's game against the Mariners.

Martinez used an elliptical machine for 10 minutes on Wednesday and took swings off a batting tee. Ausmus said he was scheduled to do the same today.

Ausmus believed Martinez was still wearing a heart monitor.

Martinez was hospitalized on June 15 after experiencing a racing heartbeat, dizziness and cold sweats during the team’s win over the Rays.
