Detroit Tigers' ugly first inning highlights inexperience on defense

It was ugly, perhaps the ugliest half-inning the Detroit Tigers have played defensively this season. And with so many inexperienced players — some of them playing out of position — there have been quite a few of those innings to choose from.

But the top of the first inning on Tuesday night at Comerica Park stands out for the Tigers’ defensive shortcomings. And by the time the bottom half of the inning started, manager Ron Gardenhire was still lecturing his young players.

The inning started with a double down the left-field line off left-hander Blaine Hardy.
