Detroit Tigers' Tyler Collins out 10-14 days with muscle strain

LAKELAND, Fla. -- Tyler Collins, who is locked in a battle to start in centerfield for the Detroit Tigers, will not be able to throw for the next 10 to 14 days because of a strained muscle in his back.

Collins still can run and hit and could be used as a designated hitter or pinch-runner.

Tigers manager Brad Ausmus today downplayed the injury because of the length of spring training.

“Plenty of time,” Ausmus said this morning. “It doesn’t help him, for sure, in the one spot where you have competition. To be injured doesn’t help him.
