Detroit Tigers trim roster to 28 players with Opening Day a week away

CLEARWATER, Fla. — The Detroit Tigers made a significant round of cuts Thursday morning to trim the roster to 28. The Tigers optioned left-handed pitchers Chad Bell and Blaine Hardy to Triple-A Toledo.

The Tigers also reassigned six players to minor league camp: catchers Derek Norris and Jarrod Saltalamacchia; infielders Pete Kozma and Ronny Rodriguez; and outfielders Jim Adduci and Chad Huffman.

"We're close, really close," Tigers manager Ron Gardenhire said of getting down to the 25-man roster limit for Opening Day. "We're just trying to get (them) over (to minor-league camp) so they can start doing their thing.
