Detroit Tigers sign lefty Travis Wood to minor league deal

The Detroit Tigers have been searching for insurance starting pitching.

They found some Monday afternoon, announcing a minor-league deal with veteran lefthander Travis Wood. The deal includes an invitation to Major League spring training.

Wood, who turns 31 next week, struggled in 2017 but is one season removed from a solid season with the Chicago Cubs. In eight MLB seasons, he has posted a 4.26 ERA and 1.31 WHIP.

In 2017, Wood had a 6.80 ERA and 1.73 WHIP in 39 games – 14 starts – with the Kansas City Royals and San Diego Padres.
