Detroit Tigers promote Trevor Rosenthal, former stud closer, to big leagues

Bullpen reinforcement is headed to the Detroit Tigers, as the team selected the contract of right-hander Trevor Rosenthal on Monday afternoon.

Rosenthal, an All-Star closer with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2015, is looking to complete a major league comeback after Tommy John surgery forced him to miss the entire 2018 season. Rosenthal also has an opt-out clause in his contract, according to a source with knowledge of the situation.

Rosenthal had two years as one of the game's best closers, collecting a combined 93 saves for St. Louis over the 2014 and 2015 seasons. He transitioned to a different role the next two years, sharing closing duties for the Cardinals with Seunghwan Oh.
