Detroit Tigers player, staff member tests positive for COVID-19

The Detroit Tigers have had one player and one staff member test positive for the novel coronavirus, general manager Al Avila said in a video conference Wednesday.

Avila did not immediately identify the player and staff member. It wasn't immediately clear whether either person still had the virus.

The player who tested positive was not based at the team's spring training facilities in Lakeland, Florida, Avila said. The staff member is not a baseball operations employee.

The news of the COVID-19 diagnoses comes one week before Tigers are set to report to training at Comerica Park for an abbreviated 60-game MLB season.
