Detroit Tigers observations: Matthew Boyd sharp vs. Yankees, unlike his teammates

TAMPA, Fla. — Detroit Tigers left-hander Matthew Boyd stayed away from one of his most potent weapons, and still mowed down the Yankees.

In three innings of work, Boyd threw just two sliders but was still highly effective Saturday in the Tigers’ 8-2 loss.

“We really didn’t throw the slider a whole lot,” said Boyd, who made his second start of the spring. “We were really working fastball in and out, sticking it away, throwing the curveball and changeup off of those lines.

“We threw a few sliders and I missed on them. I think I only threw two.
