Detroit Tigers observations: Boyd gets battered in Omaha vs. Royals, 7-3

OMAHA — It took 10 innings, but Matthew Boyd finally allowed a run at TD Ameritrade Park. Then another run. And another.

And by the time Boyd walked off the mound he once owned in the 2013 College World Series — he threw a shutout against Indiana in an elimination game that year — he had allowed a season-high five runs.

Boyd was beaten up by the Royals in a 7-2 loss in the first Major League game played in Nebraska. The Tigers offense didn’t do much, either.

Boyd’s struggles started in a laborious second inning, in which he allowed a solo home run to Nicky Lopez to open the scoring.
