Detroit Tigers' Matthew Boyd returns to Omaha, roughed up by Kansas City Royals

OMAHA – Matthew Boyd sat in the dugout during batting practice, wore his Oregon State trainers, and when he headed out to the field at TD Ameritrade Park on Thursday night, he did not head out, he bounced out.

Oregon State catcher Adley Rutschman was being presented with the Golden Spikes Award for the best college baseball player. Boyd congratulated Rutschman and said hello to his parents and almost signed an autograph for a young kid, but – heading out to the bullpen for a major league start – went with a fist bump instead.

And though the memories of his College World Series glory could not be ignored, Boyd is far removed from his college days.
