Detroit Tigers' Matthew Boyd honors fallen soldiers by writing names on cleats

Faith. Family. Country. Service.

Those four pillars form the essence of Detroit Tigers pitcher Matthew Boyd.

It’s at the core of his entire family.

His father, Kurt Boyd, served in the Navy for six years after joining the service right out of high school.

His grandfather, John Boyd, graduated from the Naval Academy.

“My grandfather went to Annapolis and served a very long time,” Boyd said. “And his father as well.”

So on Monday, before pitching against the Los Angeles Angels, Boyd did something special to celebrate Memorial Day. He grabbed his cleats, took a marker and wrote down the names of four soldiers who died.
