The stage was set for a home run derby.

In 80-degree weather on August 25, 1990, Tiger Stadium hosted 45,474 fans anxious to watch the Oakland Athletics' “Bash Brothers,” Mark McGwire and Jose Canseco, face off against the Tigers' Cecil Fielder, the league leader in home runs.

In the very first inning, the three sluggers delivered.

Canseco and McGwire hit back-to-back homers off Frank Tanana, giving the A’s a 3-0 lead. Cecil Fielder stroked a two-run blast into the upper deck left-center field bleachers off of Dave Stewart for his 40th home run of the season, becoming the fourth Tiger ever to reach that mark in a season.
