TAMPA — The Detroit Tigers made a minor move on Friday evening, acquiring catcher Cameron Rupp from the San Francisco Giants for cash considerations.

Rupp, 30, is a .234 hitter in parts of five seasons with the Phillies. The Giants signed Rupp to a minor-league deal in December. In 2018, he played in Triple-A for the Rangers, Twins, and Mariners.

Rupp will join the Tigers in major league spring training as a non-roster invitee.

The move should be viewed in the context of veteran catching insurance.
