Detroit man's 61-year connection to Tigers started with early Black players

When Steven Banks gets excited, he can sound like a Fortune 500 CEO giving a TED Talk, passionately repeating and emphasizing winning business principles and best practices, using terms like authentic "relationships,” “trust” and “accountability.”

And while Banks’ best work the past 36 years has taken place in metropolitan Detroit beauty salons, not boardrooms, he says the contributions made by people in his profession are as important as any to the overall wellness of the community he loves.

“Detroiters are really soulful people, very expressive, in terms of how they worship, dress and their overall style,” said the 56-year-old Banks, whose childhood was spent on the city’s far west side and the north side.
