LAKELAND, Fla. -- The Tigers spent Monday morning still awaiting word from a foot specialist on outfielder J.D. Martinez, who sustained a right mid-foot sprain on a shoestring catch Saturday. But manager Brad Ausmus indicated he was optimistic that he avoided a worst-case injury.
The specialist being consulted was in surgery Monday morning, Ausmus said, but the Tigers hoped to get a report by the end of the day.
"I don't think it's bleak," Ausmus said, "but we want a specialist to look at it. We should definitely know by the end of the day at the latest.
