As anthem controversy roils NFL, no protests in Tigers' home finale

DETROIT -- On a day in which national anthem protests roiled the NFL, including the Detroit Lions game across the street, every player was standing at Comerica Park.

All players and coaches on the Detroit Tigers and Minnesota Twins who were on the field for the performance of the Star-Spangled Banner were on their feet.

On Saturday night, Oakland Athletics catcher Bruce Maxwell became the first Major League player to kneel during the anthem.

Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said he wouldn't object if a Tigers player wished to protest in that manner.

"It is America," he said.
