Barry Trotz entered the season as a lame-duck coach.
All he did for the Washington Capitals was deliver a Stanley Cup.
But Trotz won't be back on the bench next season, after resigning Monday afternoon instead of accepting a two-year contract extension triggered by the championship run.
One of the NHL's all-time winningest coaches, Trotz was making $1.5 million this season, well behind the pace set by Toronto's Mike Babcock ($6.25 million) and others. And extension was raise of just $300,000 per season.
So Trotz waved goodbye, and now will be coaching free agent.
Barry Trotz had a clause in his contract where if he won the Stanley Cup he could accept a two-year extension with a $300k bump in salary.
