As he made his decision, a big part of the appeal for Trevor Daley was opportunity.
The Detroit Red Wings offered Daley a chance to be a top-four defenseman, most likely paired with Danny DeKeyser. It was a selling point in conversations Daley had last week with coach Jeff Blashill and general manager Ken Holland, and it led to a three-year, $9.5-million contract when free agency opened on Saturday.
“I love to get up the ice and I love to play a lot, too,” Daley said Saturday on a conference call.
