Washington — Alex Ovechkin was injured, and the Washington Capitals missed a major opportunity to move up in the standings on Sunday by blowing a lead and losing 4-3 in a shootout to the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Ovechkin crashed hard into the boards early in the third period after tripping on the stick of Toronto’s goalie and was ruled out with what the team called an upper-body injury.

Capitals left wing Alex Ovechkin (8) is tripped by Maple Leafs goaltender Erik Kallgren (50) during the third period of Sunday's game in Washington. Ovechkin left with an injury after the play.
