Scrappy Red Wings earn praise by standing up for each other

DETROIT - The Detroit Red Wings responded to questionable hits and roughhouse tactics not by turning the other cheek, but by looking to bust some heads in a pair of games this weekend.

Players and coach Jeff Blashill wouldn't have it any other way.

The Red Wings lost 2-0 Sunday to the Colorado Avalanche at Little Caesars Arena after Semyon Varlamov's 24-save performance was backed up by Nathan MacKinnon's second-period power-play goal.

Key offensive players Tyler Bertuzzi and Anthony Mantha didn't force the Red Wings to go on the penalty kill but had to sit in the box for five-minute stretches early in the third period during a one-goal game after they fought Ian Cole and Patrik Nemeth.
