Red Wings tripped up by Rangers, 4-1, at Joe Louis Arena

Midway through Karen Newman’s national anthem Sunday night, someone threw an octopus onto the ice at Joe Louis Arena.

With only eight home games left at the Joe, maybe it was symbolic. Even if it wasn’t, it would be one of the very few loud cheers that came from fans as the Detroit Red Wings failed to muster much of an attack and lost the New York Rangers, 4-1.

Ryan McDonagh scored twice and the Rangers scored 37 seconds apart in the second period to pull away from the Wings.

Frans Nielsen’s 14th goal of the season helped the Wings tie it, 1-1, on the power play early in the second period.
