Red Wings start strong, but lose on late goal

DETROIT - The Detroit Red Wings couldn't maintain their strong start Friday, chasing the Winnipeg Jets for much of the final two periods.

It finally caught up to them when Dustin Byfuglien scored with 6:45 remaining in the third period to snap a tie and lift the Jets to a 2-1 victory at Little Caesars Arena.

The Jets (7-3-1) outshot the Red Wings 36-14 over the final two-plus periods and 40-28 for the game. Jimmy Howard, for the second game in a row, was stellar, giving his team a chance to win.

Andreas Athanasiou scored the only goal for the Red Wings, who dropped to 1-7-2 and have scored only two goals in losing the first two games of a stretch in which they'll play seven out of eight at home.
