Red Wings sign defenseman Trevor Daley, also add Luke Witkowski

Eager to upgrade the defense even on a meager budget, the Detroit Red Wings targeted Trevor Daley as the best available option.

Daley has agreed to a three-year, $9.5 million deal worth $3.17 million annually against the salary cap. The Wings also signed Luke Witkowski to one year at $750,000 for toughness. Witkowki was the guy who fought Anthony Mantha in March, when Mantha ended up with a fractured finger.

Daley, 33, has 278 points in 894 career NHL games, the majority of them spent with the Dallas Stars. He is coming off back-to-back Stanley Cup championships with the Pittsburgh Penguins, producing 19 points in 56 games this past season and 22 points in 53 games in 2015-16.
