Dennis Cholowski was ready when the call came.
Just as he had promised.
A year ago, after being selected in the first round (20th overall) of the NHL draft, Cholowski was asked at the Detroit Red Wings development camp how long he planned to play at St. Cloud State University before turning pro.
"Whenever Detroit wants me to come, that's when I'm coming," he replied.
So when the Red Wings came calling late last season, the 6-foot-1 defenseman promptly ended his college career and joined the Grand Rapids Griffins during their regular-season stretch run before they went on to win the Calder Cup.
