Red Wings' prospect David Pope 'a shooter' who'll compete for roster spot

Time will tell if David Pope turns out to be another late-round pick that pays off for the Detroit Red Wings, but the club is high on his potential.

He's a good-sized left wing (6-3, 200) with offensive skills, coming off two strong seasons at Nebraska-Omaha.

The Red Wings signed him to a two-year entry level contract on Monday and expect him to compete for a roster spot in training camp.

Shawn Horcoff, the Red Wings director of player development, said the best way to describe Pope is that he's a shooter.

"He's a kid that has improved his skating over the years and I think that's helped him get to the areas where he can score," Horcoff said.
