Red Wings make shocking roster change ahead of preseason finale

As the preseason winds down and final roster moves reverberate across the NHL, the Detroit Red Wings made a decision that stunned much of the hockey world.

On Friday, the club announced that forward Carter Mazur, defenseman William Wallinder, and goaltender Michael Postava had been assigned to the AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins.

The most surprising of the group is undoubtedly Mazur, who has been exceptional throughout the preseason. While he wasn’t among my projected selections for the opening night roster, his reassignment to the AHL was unexpected. That said, additional games at the minor-league level could prove valuable for a player at his stage of development.
