The Detroit Red Wings recorded their first hat trick at their new arena, and built up two-goal leads on an opponent that had played the night before.
They still ended up falling, 6-5, in a shootout to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday at Little Caesars Arena, dropping a 13th straight game to the Atlantic division powerhouse.
The Wings took advantage of the Lightning starting a goaltender making his NHL debut to score twice in the first period, and retained a lead after 40 minutes thanks to Frans Nielsen’s handiwork. He collected the first hat trick by a Red Wings player since moving to their new home.
