Red Wings have room for one Griffins forward, not three goalies

DETROIT - The Detroit Red Wings need to add a forward and subtract a goaltender before opening the 2017-18 season at Little Caesars Arena Oct. 5 against the Minnesota Wild.

After the Red Wings sign restricted free agents Tomas Tatar and Andreas Athanasiou (they're not close with either) they will have 11 forwards. Newly acquired Luke Witkowski can alternate between defense and right wing, giving them 12 forwards.

They need one more forward. With virtually no salary-cap space, they expect to fill that spot from within.

"We're going to go to camp hoping one of the players from Grand Rapids can make the team," general manager Ken Holland said.
