Red Wings hapless vs. NHL's worst, lose, 3-1, at Colorado

DENVER -- In a season of struggles, this one was something of a nadir.

The Detroit Red Wings took on the Colorado Avalanche Wednesday at Pepsi Center, facing the worst team in the NHL. Still the Wings managed to look worse, unable to convert on early scoring chances and then giving up two quick goals to come away with a 3-1 loss. It is Detroit's fifth loss the past six games.

The only upside to the Wings losing as they close in on the end of the regular season is improved odds in the draft lottery.

The Wings had created good chances but weren't able to get more than one puck by Calvin Pickard, courtesy of Andreas Athanasiou, after two periods.
