DETROIT - The Detroit Red Wings today signed defenseman Alex Biega to a one-year contract extension.

Biega, 31, was acquired by Detroit in a trade with the Vancouver Canucks on Oct. 6 in exchange for left wing David Pope. Biega has appeared in 48 games with the Red Wings this season, notching three points (0-3-3), 24 penalty minutes and 53 shots on goal in 16:20 average time on ice, while ranking third on the team with 111 hits and sixth with 45 blocked shots.
