Red Wings dominated early, can't convert late power plays in loss

DETROIT - The Carolina Hurricanes played keep-away with the puck for most of the night Monday, peppering Jimmy Howard with shots while dominating the Detroit Red Wings.

Howard kept his team in the game and the Red Wings had excellent opportunities to draw even during a pair of late power plays.

But they couldn't get the tying goal past former teammate Petr Mrazek and the Hurricanes hung on for a 3-1 victory at Little Caesars Arena.

The Red Wings (1-6-2) started three-game homestand and 7-of-8 at LCA. The Hurricanes (5-3-1) snapped a three-game losing streak.

After being dominated for 2 1/2 periods, the Red Wings sprung to life following Andreas Athanasiou's goal at 12:02 of the third.
