DETROIT - Filip Hronek appeared to have the edge in competition with other defense prospects in the competition for a roster with the Detroit Red Wings coming into training camp, based on his strong rookie season in the AHL.
But Dennis Cholowski emerged as the best of the group, so he's here to stay. And Joe Hicketts is the better penalty killer, so he'll stick around a little longer.
Hronek, 20, was assigned to the Grand Rapids Griffins on Tuesday.
"I like Fil, I think he's got a real bright future," Blashill said. "He needs to make sure he's playing in the situations, both power play and I'm hoping he gets penalty kill time, so he can bring different things to the table.
