CHICAGO -- As the Detroit Red Wings approach free agency, the most sensible – and realistic – option is to add a stop-gap player or two.

The Wings spent this weekend focused on the future as they mined the 2017 NHL draft for big, skilled defensemen and centers to sustain the team down the road. Now, they'll hit the free-agent market, which officially opens July 1 at noon.
