The Red Wings returned to work for the first time since the trade deadline, one new face among the players left standing.

Gone over the past week are forwards Thomas Vanek, Steve Ott and Tomas Jurco and defenseman Brendan Smith, and with Gustav Nyquist suspended one more game, Mitch Callahan is slotting in on the fourth line for Friday’s game at Calgary. It will be Callahan’s second NHL game; his first was three years ago.

“I have to make the best of it,” Callahan said after Thursday’s practice.
