Michigan defenseman Quinn Hughes drafted No. 7 overall by Vancouver Canucks

Defenseman Quinn Hughes became the 10th top-10 draft pick in University of Michigan hockey history on Friday.

Hughes, whose 29 points (five goals, 24 assists) led all Big Ten freshman defenseman last season, was selected No. 7 overall by the Vancouver Canucks at the NHL draft in Dallas.

Defenseman Jack Johnson (third overall in 2005), defenseman Aaron Ward (fifth overall in 1991) and goalie Al Montoya (sixth overall in 2004) are the only other Wolverines players drafted higher than Hughes.

The 5-foot-10, 173-pound 18-year-old improved his draft stock last month by competing in the World Championship with the U.
